Tom Ellis returns on Telegraph with Freefalling, a four-track 12” following his acclaimed Chroma Blur release. At the centre of the EP is “Freefalling” feat. Jessie Grace — a rolling 909 groove locked into a deep, hypnotic pulse, with Grace’s haunting vocals drifting effortlessly through the track. “Freefalling” feat. Jessie Grace (Alt mix) pushes the track into a more percussive territory, bringing a solid kick and snare into the mix and giving the hypnotic groove a tougher, more driving dancefloor edge. No unnecessary decoration here. Ellis works from the groove outwards, building four tightly engineered tracks around drums, space and subtle shifts in rhythm. “Talk Shows” takes a more sophisticated route into a minimal house, unfolding through a constantly shifting groove. Detailed and elegant, it’s a subtle journey built for heads-down dancefloors and long blends. “Tune In” goes deeper into the mind. A recurring vocal phrase and drifting pad create a hypnotic loop, slowly locking the listener into its own space. Minimal, spacious and seriously mental. The digital bonus, “Ready Made”, is where Ellis turns up the heat: warm, funky and deeply groovy, with a loose, physical feel that gives the EP an irresistible dancefloor lift.

Pure groove. No excess.
